Gift Aid lets a charity claim an extra 25p from HMRC for every £1 you donate, at no cost to you. You need to be a UK taxpayer who has paid enough Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax in the tax year to cover the Gift Aid on all your donations, and you need to make a Gift Aid declaration. With Legacy, Charities Trust makes the claim for your charities.
Gift Aid & tax, sorted More giving. Less paperwork.
Gift Aid should be simple. So should keeping track of your donations.
Legacy helps you add Gift Aid to eligible donations, tracks your giving throughout the year, and keeps your records together for Self Assessment.

The problem
Giving is generous. The admin isn't.
Back a few charities and the paperwork multiplies. Each one wants its own Gift Aid declaration, sends its thank-you to a different inbox and keeps its own record of what you gave. Then the tax return comes round, and you're searching old emails and bank statements to add up a year of Gift Aid donations, hoping nothing went missing.

Higher rate tax relief on charity donations
If you pay tax above the basic rate, you can claim back the difference between your rate and the basic rate on the gross donation, which is what you gave plus the Gift Aid. Charities Trust claims the basic rate for your charities. The extra is yours to claim, and your Self Assessment report gives you the figures to do it.
Worked example
A £100 donation with Gift Aid
- You give
- £100
- Gift Aid for the charity
- £25
- Higher rate (40%) relief for you
- £25
- Additional rate (45%) relief for you
- £31.25
Illustrative, using rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish rates differ. Legacy doesn't claim your personal relief for you, so check HMRC's guidance or speak to an accountant if you're unsure.
